Lunchtime Concert 11/9/2015
'Life is a Cabaret'
with Steve Hastings and Carole Cox
Steve’s earliest memories are of big family get togethers in North London where everyone was expected to sing. He grew up thinking that it was perfectly natural to burst into song at any time; it took him some years to realise that not all families behaved in this way! The music he grew up with was Bing Crosby, the Ink Spots and Glenn Miller.
Steve’s first excursion into public performing was as a member of a folk group called “Symbiosis” (a name redolent of that era!) that sang in venues across South East Essex, performing music by artists such as Simon and Garfunkle, James Taylor and Joan Baez.
He later discovered musical theatre and spent many years treading the boards in the south east of England before moving to Yorkshire and joining Tadcaster Operatic & Dramatic Society (now Tadcaster Theatre Company).
Over the last few years Steve has been a member of TadChorale, a choral group that has performed in many venues across this part of Yorkshire, as well as at many weddings, particularly at Hazlewood castle.
Steve is also a member of a trio called “Now & Then” whose material consists of a selection of popular songs, some from the present day (“now”) but mainly from the sixties and seventies (“then”). You will also catch Steve performing at residential homes across the region, often in the company of Ken Waller, an esteemed resident of Boston Spa.
Carole has been playing the piano since the age of 5 and is still enjoying new experiences which come with such a wonderful hobby. She was a Junior Exhibitioner at the Royal College of Music in London, studying both piano and ‘cello, and was a player in several amateur orchestras until retirement.
Whilst Carole’s two children were growing up, she spent 10 happy years working for Leeds Education Dept as a peripatetic school pianist and also taught piano and ‘cello from home.
Like Steve, Carole has been involved with local operatic societies in Yorkshire for the past 35 years, and as rehearsal pianist, has been kept very busy. Being Director of TadChorale since 2004, is another time-consuming hobby, but so rewarding, hearing the choir produce such a good sound and receive compliments as well as frequent concert bookings.
Carole and Steve have had many opportunities to give performances together and have always enjoyed providing musical entertainment.
