Press Release following the visit:-

After fourteen years of work and fundraising, Joan Dyer, a member of Boston Spa Methodist Church has seen an unused, barren site develop into an almost completed school, housing seven hundred children.  Joan has spearheaded the fundraising for Brikama School in the Gambia, raising over £60,000.  Only £2500 is now required to complete the project, finishing the final four classrooms to house a further two hundred children who are at present taught in dilapidated buildings.

When in February 2013 Joan paid her annual visit to Brikama, she had already decided that in her eightieth year she would make this her last trip as age and health were making visits more difficult.  God, however, had different ideas! For while Joan stood at the edge of the River Gambia a piece of driftwood floated towards her.  She kicked it away and walked down the river bank but the wood then drifted to her again.  She picked it out of the water and stared at it in amazement - it was a perfect rugged cross! Joan sees this as a sign that she must complete the project and house the remaining 200 children before she finally retires from the project.

Are you able to provide her with a donation towards completion of the School? If so please give Joan a ring on 01937 843533.

Joan and her late husband Allan first visited The Gambia in 1999 to see how and where the Palm Crosses were made.  However they soon became involved with the Brikama School Project.  From then on, Joan and Allan visited Brikama annually to ensure funds were used as intended checking the accounts to verify work done.  By their actions this has proved to be an exemplar Christian project.  The school caters for Christian and Muslim children who are educated in harmony with none of the divisions seen in other parts of Africa.
